What is Somatic Experiencing™?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) “is a potent psychobiological method for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. It resets the nervous system, restores inner balance, enhances resilience to stress, and increases people’s vitality, equanimity, and capacity to actively engage in life.”—SE Institute
It is Dr. Peter Levine’s life’s work of over 45+ years of successful clinical application. He overlays a multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, medical biophysics over psychology methodologies.
How Does SE™ Work? What is a typical session like?
Dr. Peter Levine says, “Trauma is a fact of life. It does NOT, however, have to be a life sentence.” The SE approach broadly covers the spectrum of releasing shock trauma from an unexpected traumatic event, which is key to transforming PTSD, all the way to the wounds of emotional and early childhood developmental attachment trauma.
When you come to an SE session, it does NOT require the traumatized person to re-tell or re-live the traumatic event. Dr. Peter Levine has said, “trauma does not rest in the event but in the individual’s nervous system.” The practitioner is paying attention to the body talk by closely attuning and aligning to the person’s nervous system. The practitioner helps the client support their experience and encourages the nervous system to regain resiliency. “SE offers the individual the opportunity to engage, complete, and resolve—-in a slow and supported way—-the body’s instinctual fight, flight and freeze responses. This resets the nervous system, restores inner balance, enhances resilience to stress, and increases people’s vitality, equanimity, and capacity to actively engage in life.”
Sessions are one hour in length and we will work introspectively for about 20-30 minutes of that with time to process.
